Session 4

The final session of the term required us to apply all of the knowledge we had learn over the past few weeks. In our groups we were given scenes from Hamlet and then using gobos, gels and lights we had to great the scene. We were given a scene in Hamlets mansion and a scene outside, two very different scenes but this allowed us to experiment a bit more.

We used a window Gobo to make it seem like we were in doors, and ignorer to creat indoor lighting we did a fire effect. This was because during shakespeare time they would have used candles to light the scene so we didn’t want lighting that was too strong.

For the outdoors scene, we used an out of focus cloud gobo to create a mysterious and spooky atmosphere.

Both out gobos were mounted on LED lights and put on stands, and we had 1 Parnell light shining from above to provide a dim bit of extra light but nothing too extreme. we also used a Fresnel on a floor stand for the fire effect.

Session 3

This session consisted mainly of Gobos which are round disks that you put on the front of the light and it projects the shape onto the wall or desired surface. We put our gobos on the front of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights because they do not get as hot as the other lights so this is less of a fire hazard, but we can also change the colour of the light from the lighting desk, this means that we can change the colour of the projection without having to but a gel on the light as well as the gobo, this saves time and allows us to change the colours easier than with the gels. We experimented with fire effects and forest effects to create atmosphere using the gobos.

Session 2

Session 2: we experimented with colour gels and learnt how to work at height.

We got given a free sample book by LEE Filters, which is a company that makes lighting gels. Then we practiced using the different gels and recording the effect the light had on clothing and people. We used LED based lights which have advantages because the don’t get as hot as some of the other lights that we use in the theatre.

Working at height we climbed up a ladder as well as a larger metal structure. We discussed and all agreed that we felt more secure on the large steel deck than the ladder as the weighting felt more balanced on the deck. I only got one photo of the working at height as I was busy scampering up ladders.

First session

In the first session of lighting we were taught how to correctly rug up a light on a stand, as well as how light looks when signed on people at different angles and the effects that had on people and clothes.

What do I hope to achieve?

By the End of this Lighting module I hope to be able to

  • Successfully rig a light
  • Know how to change the colour of a light
  • know how to work at height -(use a ladder properly)
  • Light a scene effectively to create desired mood.

I hope that this project will make me more considerate as a designer and also help me to understand more about how my designs will look when lit.
